Random Cinema
I was kind of taking it easy for a while today before some people pop by later. I saw 'Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs' on NetFlix instant view. I had heard some positive things about it and thought I would give it a go in the background while I ate some lunch. All I have to say is, damn! This movie was absolutely fantastic.
The Dark Backward is one of the most difficult movies to quantify. Released in 1991 it the first film that Adam Rifkin wrote and directed. Despite this it managed to attract an all-star cast including Judd Nelson, Bill Paxton, James Canne, Lara Flynn Boyle, Rob Lowe and Wayne Newton. Heck there is even an appearance by Billy Bob Thornton. King Moody(Ronald McDonald in the 1970s) and a couple of overweight porn-stars also make appearances. Despite this cast the film made only $28,654 in theaters and was universally panned by critics. It took almost fifteen years for it to come to DVD. While it is almost the exact definition of a cult film it may be too poorly known for that moniker.
Gotta be honest, the only reason I rented this one was because the 'Flight of the Conchords' guys were in it. That's about the only reason, saw the trailer and there they were. Why not rent it? Better get the disclaimer out right away about this one, Bret McKenzie, Rhys Darby and Jemaine Clement are all in the movie but that was order of screen time right there. Jemaine is in the first sequence and never shows up again. Rhys plays a doctor at the beginning and end and that's about it. Brett is around quite a bit, not the main character though. All the Conchord guys were hilarious, but so was the movie.
Welcome back loyal listeners to another installment of Dirty Sprocket Random Cinema. This time I am joined by Matt and we watched the very weird and messed up 'Videodrome.' Sit back and enjoy as we try to dissect what the hell this movie was about.
Welcome one and all to the very first post of Dirty Sprocket Random Cinema. Now you ask what the hell is that? I love renting random movies from the video store. One of my favorite things is to go just rent several movies I haven't seen and marathon watch them. Some are new, some are old and some are just way the hell out there. These Random Cinema posts are going to be giving you, the people out there, an insight into some movies you may have never seen before. I'll tell you if you should see them or avoid them like the plague. In this first post I am talking about the movies Falling Down and Death Sentence. Enjoy.
