Something I thought I would never do – defend the Oscars

If you haven’t listened to the last Sprock-Talk it might not be a bad idea to listen to it here before going further with this post. It will give you a basis on my thoughts on the Oscars, in particular this year.
Personally, I don’t care for the Oscars. I don’t really enjoy watching them, I didn’t this year. I think more often than not it is out of touch with truly artistic movies. I think the campaigning that studios do to get their movies wins is some bull shit. I hate all of the movies that are geered towards winning Oscars. They aren’t trying to make the best movie they can, they are trying to just win awards. It’s called Oscar-bait.
Again, I don’t care much for the Oscars. Now here comes the gigantic ass but here. Not that kind of but, pervert. I have a couple of words of defense for them as they have come under some heavy fire after ‘Hurt Locker’ toppled ‘Avatar.’ Let me begin by saying I haven’t seen ‘Avatar,’ personally I don’t really care to. From people I have talked to that have seen it, it doesn’t sound like my kind of movie. But whatever. I did see ‘Hurt Locker,’ however personally I don’t think it was the best movie of the year, it is a fine movie. I just wanted to get that out there because I can’t really pick between the two which I think would be best because I haven’t seen both, but I have a problem with people being pissed off just because ‘Avatar’ made like a bajillion dollars and ‘Hurt Locker’ only made like twenty.
That is a terrible argument. The Oscars aren’t supposed to be a popularity contest. It was created to recognize the best movies of the year, not just technically, but the movies that strive to be art. It isn’t about what movie made the most money, it’s about what is the absolute best movie of the year. I think a lot of the time the Oscars do fall short in truly rewarding the best movies that come out in a year, but it tries, kind of. I think though we need it. We need it as a medium to recognize all of those movies mainstream America didn’t see but should, not about pandering to the movie going public. So I say to the Oscars, keep up the good fight. Just don’t be such pricks about it and ‘District 9′ forever. See you on the other side – Derek
