The Black Dynamite Review you Jive Turkey

I have been really looking forward to the movie ‘Black Dynamite’ for quite a while. Now, I’m not old enough to have seen blacksploitation films when they were being made. I have read about many of them and enjoy checking out clips and trailers from them, one of the most famous being ‘Blacula.’ You know, he’s black and Dracula. You see, if you combine, oh never mind you get it. Again, I have a soft spot for these types of movies.
‘Black Dynamite’ has been making the rounds in some festivals and such and have a lot of people talking and the trailer has been out for a really long time. The movie finally came out, and thank God it finally did.
‘Black Dynamite’ is the brain-child of its actor/producer Michael Jai White. The man is Black Dynamite! Dynamite! The dude gets his own theme music anytime he walks into a room. This movie is so beyond freaking hilarious. Everything about it is faithful to its 70’s b-movie roots. The film looks degraded, people look at the wrong cameras, booms fall into shots, as cars fall down mountains they are different makes and colors. If you can dig that kind of comedy than you will enjoy it. If you are looking for a more direct spoof of the genre, ala the bullshit Disaster-Epic-Date-Crap Movies you are looking in the wrong place. This movie is shot without an ounce of a wink to the cameras. It is funny because this is basically a movie from that era, like ‘Black Dynamite’ was some lost gem from the 70’s.
The story, really it is more of a loose framework, is about Black Dynamite’s brother being killed by drug dealers and he is out looking revenge. Along the way we get to see whitey government officials, bad drug dealers, amazing drivers, kung-fu masters, pimps, fools and finally king whitey himself. Again, there isn’t much to say about the plot, it is more about the funny situations Black Dynamite gets into and out of.
One quick note as well, the movie is ‘R’ and for a reason. There is some bad language and a fair amount of nudity at points.
A little while ago we implemented a rating system, a percentage-based one, which we have now abandoned. Here’s how the new rating system goes:
Buy It – Seriously, go buy this you will watch it again.
Go See It – Go check it out in the theaters, but that would probably be enough.
Rent It – Not something you will see multiple times and not worth seeing on the big screen.
TV It – Don’t pay money to see this but you might get a kick out of it.
Die and go to hell movie – Pretty self explanatory.
Black Dynamite – Buy It
This is a movie you can watch over and over and get a hell of a kick out of it every time you do. Now go pick it up you jive turkeys, Dynamite, Dynamite!
Share this little slice of awesomeness
